CSN´s chairman participates in the ministerial session of the International Conference on Nuclear Security ICONS 2020

A delegation from the Spanish Safety Nuclear Council (CSN), headed by its chairman Josep Maria Serena i Sender, has participated in Vienna on the first day of the third edition of the “International Conference on Nuclear Security ICONS 2020: Sustaining and Strengthening Efforts.”

The meeting, organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and which will take place throughout the week, aims to establish the institutional and technical bases on which the agency will develop its activities in this discipline whose purpose is to ensure the protection of nuclear and radioactive materials and facilities.

The conference is developed in two main sessions, ministerial and technical. With regard to the ministerial activity, the member states, through their permanent missions, have made the corresponding official statements in which the responsibilities of each country have been exposed in the areas related to Nuclear Security.

In the case of Spain, the statement will be made on Tuesday by the Spanish Ambassador to the International Organizations in Vienna, Senén Florensa Palau, underlining support for the IAEA in its work to strengthen Nuclear Security Culture and mitigate threats through programs of training and adopting a commitment on regional and international cooperation.

An international declaration that encompasses the common objectives and commitments of the member states will be issued from this conference, reiterating the need to maintain and strengthen a global security framework.

The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council will also be attending the technical session of this meeting, with the participation of various representatives of the security area of the regulatory body, as well as its main responsible, Pedro Lardiez.

Meeting with the new IAEA Director General

In the framework of the Conference, CSN´s chairman Josep Maria Serena, together with the Ambassador Senén Florensa Palau, held a meeting with IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, who thanked the Government of Spain and the CSN for their commitment on improving the global framework of Nuclear Security.

This meeting has also provided an opportunity to address new proposals for collaboration between the IAEA and the Spanish Safety Nuclear Council, within the framework of the 40th  anniversary activities of the regulatory body.
