Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA)

Asociación de Reguladores Nucleares Europeos (WENRA)

The Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA) was created to establish a regional forum enabling western European countries to exchange information and expertise in nuclear safety and the implementation of European Union (EU) initiatives and programmes oriented toward the harmonisation of the safety of EU nuclear facilities. In this sense, with the EU’s expansion, WENRA took on an active role evaluating the nuclear safety conditions of applicant countries.

WENRA is an association of the nuclear safety regulatory bodies of various countries. The association’s activities focus on identifying and applying safety terms of reference in national legislation and nuclear plants, radioactive waste and spent fuel storage facilities and nuclear facilities decommissioning. Thus, member countries have an independent tool to help them evaluate their facilities and ascertain where their national safety level stands in comparison to the safety level of the other WENRA countries.
