Radioactive Waste Management Committee (RWMC)

Comité de Gestión de Residuos Radiactivos (RWMC)

The Radioactive Waste Management Committee (RWMC), created in 1975, is made up of experts representing regulatory authorities, radioactive waste management and decommissioning organisations, policy-making bodies and research and development institutions of the member countries of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission (EC) also participate in the work of the committee, which frequently cooperates with these and other international organisations.

The fundamental goal of the RWMC is to foster international cooperation in the management of material from nuclear facilities, including facility decommissioning and long-term management of nuclear facility waste. Accordingly, the RWMC fosters understanding and sharing of the necessary scientific and technical knowledge and of new challenges and issues, it facilitates strategy making and encourages best waste management practices, it proposes common bases for national regulatory frameworks, and it runs research projects and databases.
