European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) holds its 7th International Conference in Brussels

ENSREG´s Chair Juan Carlos Lentijo highlighted the milestones in the organization's work programs

CSN formalized the Memorandum of Understanding with the Swiss regulatory authority approved by Plenary in April 2024

The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG), chaired by the President of the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN, by its acronym in Spanish), Juan Carlos Lentijo, held the 7th edition of the International Regulatory Conference in Brussels. The event, organized by ENSREG and the European Commission, was attended by more than two hundred professionals from the main stakeholders in the European Union's nuclear sector, with invitations to experts of other countries.

The event was opened by the President of the Conference, Igor Sirc, head of the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration; the Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson; and the General Director of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), William Magwood. The chairs of ENSREG, Juan Carlos Lentijo; WENRA, Mark Foy; and HERCA, Jean-Luc Lachaume also participated presenting the objectives of their organizations.

During his statement, Lentijo reviewed the activities carried out by ENSREG over the past three years and the ongoing tasks of its working groups. Among these, he highlighted the implementation of the measures r

esulting from the international peer reviews; the work focused on the safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste, as well as the transparency and communication activities of the association.

In addition, Lentijo expressed that these biennial conferences are always a milestone in their work programs. "We are convinced that this Conference is a forum for debate and discussion that will allow us to broaden our understanding of the current context and to launch the initiatives that are considered necessary", the CSN´s president said.

All sessions featured a colloquium format following the presentations in which participants presented case studies and shared learned lessons as a reference for action in the face of emerging challenges, both for regulators and other organizations involved in the international framework.

Of particular interest were the interventions dedicated to adapting regulation to the new energy context, the challenges posed by climate change and the regulatory approach for granting authorizations for small modular reactors.

Memorandum of Understanding

The delegation of the Spanish regulator formalized the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swiss regulator, the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI), which had been approved by the CSN Plenary last April. Its purpose is the exchange of information on nuclear safety and radiation protection between both regulatory authorities and reflects the will to strengthen and develop their bilateral relations, making special mention to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and its related activities.

About ENSREG

The CSN participates in its meetings as well as in ENSREG working groups dedicated to the areas of Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, International Cooperation and Communication and Transparency of the regulatory body.

The CSN was represented at the meeting, in addition to its president, by Commissioner Elvira Romera and other members of the regulator's technical staff.
