The CSN Participates in the XVI Congress of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) in Orlando

Commissioner Elvira Romera presented the post-Fukushima radiological protection measures implemented by the Spanish regulator

The convention served as a meeting point to establish international synergies and strengthen national capacities in radiological protection in Latin America and the Caribbean

A delegation from the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN, by its acronym in Spanish), led by Commissioner Elvira Romera, participated this week in the XVI Congress of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) held in Orlando (USA). This edition brought together radiological protection experts throughout the world under the theme "Radiation Harmonization: United for Protection".

The congress featured an extensive programme including scientific sessions, technical presentations, and roundtables focused on radiological protection across sectors, with particular emphasis on the nuclear industry and the nuclear fuel cycle.

During the event, Commissioner Elvira Romera outlined the post-Fukushima radiological protection measures required by the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council. Romera highlighted the regulatory improvements in this field, including modifications to regulations and technical instructions issued to Spanish nuclear power plants requiring radiological protection measures. She noted that the main actions related to radiological protection involve planning, resources and capabilities for management, protection of operators at nuclear facilities, sample collection processes during an accident, environmental radiation monitoring and control systems, and individual protection of workers during radiological and nuclear emergencies.

Additionally, Alfredo de los Reyes, the head of International Relations for the Spanish regulator, participated in a panel on safety culture as the Chairman of the Executive Technical Committee of the Ibero-American Forum of Radiological and Nuclear Regulatory Agencies (FORO).

De los Reyes presented the FORO's vision on developing a safety culture in radiological protection in Ibero-America, emphasizing the organisation’s recent projects: the first on safety culture guidelines in organisations, facilities, and activities involving the use of radiation sources; and the second on introducing a FORO safety culture model, implemented for the first time in industrial radiography organisations.

IRPA

The International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) is an organisation that brings together radiological protection societies from around the world. Its main objective is to promote radioprotection by advancing science and practice in this field, as well as fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange among its members.

To reinforce this objective, the association holds this Congress every four years, an important international event that gathers experts, professionals, and academics in the field of radiological and nuclear protection. During these sessions, advancements, research, and best practices related to radiological and nuclear safety are discussed and shared.

This edition of the IRPA congress has been useful as a meeting point to establish international synergies and strengthen national capacities in radiological protection in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as incorporating a gender perspective in this sector. Additionally, there were notable discussions on new technologies applied to radiological safety and initiatives to promote inclusion and diversity in the nuclear sector. The IRPA International Congress also facilitates the updating of knowledge and dissemination of the latest developments in all areas of radiological protection.

The CSN’s participation in this international event underscores Spain's commitment to nuclear safety and radiological protection on a global scale.
