The IAEA Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network will be chaired by the Spanish Alfredo de los Reyes Castelo

The Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced the establishment of its 15th Steering Committee. The expert belonging to the Spain’s Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), Alfredo de los Reyes Castelo, will be part of it, in the role of Chairman and for a period of 3 years. The appointment of a new chair for this Committee is the responsibility of the IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Safety and Security, Juan Carlos Lentijo.

The GNSSN is a web platform that operates at global, regional and national level to share information on nuclear safety and security, but also a human network with the aim to develop knowledge on this matter and thus contribute to the objective of achieving worldwide implementation of a high level of nuclear safety and security. The GNSSN is part of the integrated IAEA methodology for capacity-building framework in order to support the national nuclear safety infrastructure in the Member States, contributes to enhancing international cooperation and dialogue in the field of nuclear safety, as well as harmonizing national approaches to knowledge management. Its main members are information providers and network operators.

Alfredo de los Reyes Castelo, who will not need to leave his position at the CSN, is currently responsible for the CSN´s International Relations. De los Reyes Castelo holds a degree in Nuclear Safety Engineeringh from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Before joining the CSN in 1999, he worked at the Ispra Joint Research Center (Italy) and on the STORM project to analyze the consequences of severe nuclear accidents. He is currently Chairman of the Technical Executive Committee of the Ibero-American Forum of Radiological and Nuclear Regulators (FORO) and the Technical Project Leader of the INSC assistance project to support Morocco in improving its regulatory infrastructure, funded by the European Commission.

For his appointment, the IAEA highlights that De los Reyes has been a member for the last years, on the part of Spain, of the committee that he will chair from now on and that his extensive knowledge and experience in this field make him an ideal candidate for this important responsibility.
