European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG)

Grupo de Reguladores Europeos de Seguridad Nuclear (ENSREG)

The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) is an independent group of experts created in 2007 by a decision by the European Commission. ENSREG is a forum where experts and senior officials from European regulatory authorities in charge of nuclear safety, safety in radioactive waste management and radiation protection can meet.

The group’s mission is to take a joint, coordinated approach to continuous improvement in these areas and, where need be, to recommend or advise the European Commission on the drafting of additional common rules and regulations in these fields. Other issues are discussed at ENSREG as well, such as the harmonisation between states or the regulatory authority transparency. The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) participates in the group’s meetings accompanied by the Ministry of Industry, and it serves on several ENSREG working groups devoted to the areas of nuclear safety, radioactive waste and spent fuel management, international cooperation and communication and regulatory authority transparency.

ENSREG regularly organises workshops and lectures on nuclear safety topics. The CSN plays a significant role in the organisation and running of these events:
