The CSN attends the 66th meeting of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations of the Nuclear Energy Agency

The Spanish Safety Nuclear Council (CSN) participated in Paris at the 66th meeting of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI), held at the headquarters of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), in Paris, on December 4th and 5th.

The CSN delegation has been headed by Commissioner Francisco Castejón along with Carlos Castelao, Head of Research and Knowledge Management.

The progress and planning of the foreseen activities under this Committee have been reviewed during this meeting, and new ones have been approved, based on the presentations and proposals coming from its working groups.

The most significant activities carried out at this meeting, regarding CSN participation, have been those related to the CSNI Program Review Group (PRG). Specifically, it has been addressed with special attention the technical report presented on seismic probabilistic safety assessment for nuclear facilities.

On the other hand, a presentation has been made on the meeting of specialists in thermohydraulics that will take place in Madrid in 2020 and in which organization both the CSN and the Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technological Research (CIEMAT) will participate.

The Committee has also approved the final report of the Benchmark Study of the Accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Phase II in which the effectiveness of the application of codes in severe accidents has been analyzed. 22 organizations, including the CSN, coming from 11 countries, have participated in this project.

The Spanish delegation has also held meetings with several NEA officials responsible for technical and management activities within the international agency, with representatives from other regulatory bodies and, additionally, with officials from the OECD Spanish Permanent Representation.

The CSNI is composed of nine working groups that cover subjects such as risk assessment, accident analysis and management, aging and integrity of structures and components, organizational and human factors, safety of the fuel cycle, electrical systems and external events management.

The mission of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) is to assist member countries in maintaining and further developing the scientific and technical knowledge base required to assess the safety of nuclear reactors and fuel cycle facilities. The Committee is made up of senior scientists and engineers, with broad responsibilities for safety technology and research programmes, and representatives from regulatory authorities. The CSN actively participates in most of the groups, programs and projects of the CSNI.
