The CSN participates in Brussels at the 39th meeting of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG)

The chairman of the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), Josep Mª Serena i Sender, and the technical director, Rafael Cid, participated in Brussels at the 39th meeting of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG).

After the welcome and introduction to the assistants by the current chairperson of the group, Marta Žiaková, the meeting began with the analysis of the results of the first Topical Peer Review (TPR) on aging management, remembering to submit a report on the application of this TPR at the end of 2021. Related to this issue it has also been addressed the monitoring of the National Action Plans (NAcP) and the development of a questionnaire to assess the first TPR that it will be distributed in 2020.

During this meeting information was exchange among the assistants about the progress made by the working groups in the areas of Nuclear Safety, Waste Management and Communication and Transparency. Within the highlights of the three groups is the agreement of the next TPR for 2023-2024, the coordination of the IRRS (Integrated Regulatory Review Service) and the ARTEMIS (Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation) IAEA’s missions to EU countries or the results of this year's ENSREG conference.

This meeting has also allowed representatives of the nuclear regulatory authorities to discuss other topics of interest of the association, such as the development of the Stress Tests and the National Action Plans outside the EU (Turkey, Armenia, Belarus and Iran), the design of a questionnaire to ensure effective public participation in Member States on long-term operation (LTO) and dismantling or the ELSMOR (European Lisencing of Small Modular Reactors) project that aims to support European licenses for small modular reactors (SMRs).

Finally, the day has ended with other internal affairs of this association, such as the need to strengthen coordination between ENSREG and the Western European Nuclear Regulators' Association (WENRA) and the accomplishment of the VI ENSREG Report to the Council and the European Parliament.

ENSREG is a high-level advisory group created in 2007 at the request of the European Commission to raise recommendations to the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament on Nuclear Safety and Nuclear Waste Management. The CSN participates in various group meetings as well as in several ENSREG working groups dedicated to the areas of Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, International Cooperation and Communication and Transparency of the regulatory body.
