The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) continuously monitors the situation of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants and is in permanent coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The CSN is also monitoring the information gathered by the IAEA on radiation levels, both from the sites of Ukrainian nuclear facilities and from radiation monitoring networks in the rest of the country and around the world. Until now, no radiation level above normal has been detected.

In the early hours of today, a fire broke out in one of the buildings of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, specifically in a simulator far from the nuclear zone, as a result of the impact of a missile. The fire, put out by the staff of the facilities, has not affected its operation. No variations in radiation levels have been observed either.

The plant's staff continues to work at their job positions, monitoring the status of the units in accordance with the requirements for their safe operation, according to the latest data provided by the IAEA Incident and Emergency Center, in close contact with the regulator and the Ukrainian operator. Tours are also being carried out by specialist personnel to identify any damage to the site. The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has offered a press conference to report on the details of the situation.

According to information provided by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), the operation of unit 1 of the plant has been interrupted and units 2 and 3 have been disconnected from the grid and the cooling of these nuclear facilities is being carried out. Unit 4 continues to operate with a power of 690 MW, just over 60% of its capacity, to guarantee a safe source of electrical energy for all the safety systems on the site. Units 5 and 6 are being shut down and currently in the cooling process. The cooling of nuclear fuel in the power units of the Zaporizhzhya NPP is guaranteed by the electrical supply systems foreseen in their design in accordance with the requirements of the safety procedures.

SNRIU also reported that since 07:00 on March 3, the operating personnel have not been relieved.

From the point of view of safety, the plant's reactors have characteristics that are very similar to those in western countries and very different from those of Chernobyl's graphite-moderated boiling water reactors (RBMK).
